Dolphins are commonly known to be one of the most intelligent animals in the world. That they are very friendly, highly adaptable, and have good memories is no secret. They can recognize themselves in a mirror, mimic our actions, but most importantly, learn a language and communicate with each other through whistles and tails slaps on water. Dolphins are not smarter than humans. Humans are the most intelligent species on the planet. However, dolphins are among the most intelligent. Other species which might be more intelligent than dolphins include orangutans, gorillas, and octopuses. Their intelligence goes far beyond just this, though, as it has been estimated that their brains are about six times as large as ours for their size. It would seem that if there was any animal that could be smarter than humans, it would be these massive mammals of the sea. But we must ask ourselves, what makes us so much smarter than them? What makes humans so superior? Their society is much different. Dolphins live in pods, groups of around 10-30 individuals who stay together for life. However, they do not appear to be as complex or as intelligent as a human society because there is no social structure beyond the pod. They aren't like humans; there are societies inside societies with multiple layers of complexity. Even though dolphins don't have a very complicated social structure, they still face problems that must be solved when living together in this close setting. There was no sign of them developing technologies, writing systems, or language until we started teaching them these things, which credence to my theory that they simply lack any cognitive ability towards complex thinking. When we consider all the factors, we find that elephants might have a higher IQ than humans. Still, there is no exact number yet because it depends on how we measure human intelligence (there are many theories). However, scientists did discover that dolphins and apes can learn faster and better than humans themselves and even imitate behaviors that could make them more intelligent.
